Aus market stays strong in England

first_imgThe strong Aussie dollar continues to push Aussies into England, with VisitEngland finding figures from down under remaining strong.A New York based spokesperson, Emma Thomas told e-Travel Blackboard that Australia continues to be the region’s top market and expects numbers to grow over the coming years as the country prepares to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.“With the exchange rate, the Australian market is really strong,” she said.“Fortunately it remains really high and is a priority for us to see growth from the region.”Ms Thomas said as Decade of Sports commences in England, with the country planning to host up to six major sporting events over nine to ten years, the number of Aussies visiting areas outside of main tourists areas are expected to grow.“A lot of Australians that have been to England have seen London and they want to try something new and areas out of the city are where they will be heading,” Ms Thomas said.“There are no language barriers so it’s easy for them to do so.”The tourist board’s spokesperson added that the Queen’s recent visit down under and the Royal Wedding have helped usher in more visitors from Australia.She described the recent growth as a “good prelude” to what’s expected as major events commence next year.As well as the Olympic Games, next year England will play host to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee which celebrates her 60 years on the throne, the Olympic torch relay, Charles Dickens 200th birthday, Cotsworld Olympicks, the Sinking of the Titanic, World Shakespeare Festival, Stratford-upon-Avon, the opening of the Harry Potter Studio Tour, WorldPride and the London 2012 Festival. Domestic travel has also picked up according to Ms Thomas, with home stay developing into a “cool” travel.She explained that the dollar “made it easy” for locals take a weekend holiday and visit regions across the country.“The people have really embraced domestic travel over the year and they’ve realised how beautiful the country is,” she added.
