Alastair Pike / AFP/Getty Images On Saturday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that its officials are working with state health authorities to examine a growing number of pulmonary illnesses linked to e-cigarette use. But it’s not the only federal agency actively investigating vaping-related health issues.Earlier this month, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has continued to look into a potential link between vaping and seizures. As of Aug. 7, the agency has received 127 reports of seizure or other neurological symptoms, such as fainting or tremors, that occurred after vaping between 2010 and 2019. That’s 92 additional cases since April 3, 2019, when the FDA issued its first statement, alerting people to the potential link. There’s certainly a sound basis for concern: Seizures are a known potential side effect of nicotine poisoning and there have been case studies showing that people who accidentally or intentionally swallow e-liquids that contain nicotine experience seizures or seizure-like movements. Juul devices are small and easy to hide from authority figures, which is likely one reason they’ve become so popular with teens. truthinitiative.org While vaporizer cartridges contain varying levels of nicotine, some e-cigarettes design features can make it easy for a user to consume high levels of nicotine quickly. For instance, Juul Labs’ Juulpods contain as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes and the company claims its nicotine salt formulation is as easy to inhale as cigarettes and delivers nicotine up to 2.7 times faster than other e-cigarettes. Packaging can also be misleading: One study found that some e-liquids contained up to 52% more nicotine than stated. Proving a direct connection between vaping and seizures, however, has proven difficult. The reports the FDA has received haven’t provided enough detail to establish a clear pattern or cause, according to the FDA’s first statement: “Seizures have been reported among first-time e-cigarette users and experienced users. In a few situations, e-cigarette users reported a prior history of seizure diagnosis. A few reported cases indicated that the seizures occurred in association with the use of other substances such as marijuana or amphetamines. Seizures have been reported as occurring after a few puffs or up to one day after use.”As the FDA continues its investigation, the agency is asking that consumers report any unexpected health or product issues experienced with e-cigarettes or any tobacco product to the FDA through the Safety Reporting Portal. Jimmy Wales, co-founder of the free online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, said on Friday that future of Wikipedia is in India.Addressing a large crowd in Mumbai University during the opening day of the three-day Wiki Conference India, Wales said that he was incredibly lucky to be in India, not just because he almost didn’t make it, but also because Wikipedia was looking at great opportunities in Indian languages.Speaking about why the conference was held in India this year, Wales said that it was due to the prospect of enormous growth that Indian languages offered. However, he also mentioned that English language has nearly 3 million entries on the Wikipedia managed by around 35,000 editors, whereas Hindi has only around 50 editors. He also mentioned that the problem of keyboards and software in developing the Wikipedia in Indian languages could be addressed by the Wikimedia Foundation, the Trust that oversees the encyclopedia’s activities.Indian languages Wikipedia is at least 10 years behind English Wikipedia, but it has a great potential to grow, he added.Speaking about the prospect of Wikipedia and Wikimedia in India at the conference, Professor Krishna Kumar, who is working on Indian languages in the U.K., said that the future of Wikipedia and Wikimedia was bright. “It has done in a decade what the Alexandria library could not do in 2,000 years. Wikipedia will do a service to India where language problems have multiplied,” he added.Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha staged a protest at the venue of Wiki Conference, with the protesters claiming that the Wikipedia map of India, Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh were shown in different colors, indicating that they were not a part of India.

Perez says that this week he traveled to the startup hub to talk with entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and industry leaders about the evolving workforce.“Thanks in large measure to innovation in recent decades there, the American workforce — and the very nature of work — is experiencing some profound changes,” Perez wrote in a recent blog post. “It’s not just the growth of new technologies, but also the rise of entirely new industries and new job structures.” The expansion of the gig, or freelance economy, has been largely fueled by the expansion of the sharing economy, which includes companies such as Uber, Lyft, Airbnb, Postmates and Taskrabbit. Instead of holding one full-time job with a single company, individuals are increasingly creating their own web of multiple part-time, flexible jobs. The trouble for the government, though, is that this tech-enabled evolution in the job market is particularly hard to track.Related: The Sharing Economy Is More than a Buzzword. It’s Changing How We Live.“This is an exciting, entrepreneurial development that is tapping into powerful consumer demand while giving workers flexibility and enabling them to monetize existing assets, like their cars or extra rooms in their homes,” Perez says. “At the same time, the on-demand economy raises important questions about how to continue upholding time-honored labor standards and how to promote economic security for American workers in a changing labor market.”To generate national-level data on this rising gig economy, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will partner with the Census Bureau to bring back the Contingent Worker Supplement, which tracks independent contractors, temporary employees and workers holding multiple jobs at the same time. The Contingent Worker Supplement will be part of the next population survey, expected in May 2017.The government is not alone in its struggle to keep pace with the recent rapid evolution of the job market.
