Last night brought the first of two Widespread Panic shows to the great Wanee Festival, just one day after JoJo Hermann spoke about the band’s plan to cease touring after 2016. In addition to his musical prowess, Billy has proven to be a highly entertaining historian for the band. In his 2015 memoir Deal: My Three Decades of Drumming, Dreams, and Drugs with the Grateful Dead, Kreutzmann goes into gritty detail about the band’s long, strange trip. Watch Bill tell the hilarious story on CONAN: Nearly 52 years ago to the day, on May 5, 1965, a nearly-19-year-old Bill Kreutzmann took the stage with a new little jug band called The Warlocks for their first ever gig at a pizza parlor in Palo Alto, CA. That band would eventually change its name to the Grateful Dead, and go on to become one of the most musically and culturally influential bands of all time. Today, as we celebrate Kreutzmann’s 70th birthday, we take a look back at some of our favorite Billy moments from years past.As one-half of the Dead’s legendary two-piece rhythm section (along with Mickey Hart), Kreutzmann helped define the role of the jam band drummer by both propelling the full band’s improvisations and taking the audience on a percussion-only journey with a nightly “Drums” segment. After seventy five years walking the Earth, Aaron Neville almost seems to be picking up speed. His famed falsetto is approaching the fifty year anniversary of his first million selling record, “Tell It Like It Is,” back in 1967, and on his newest release, Apache, he shows himself to be as vital and on point as ever. Born and raised in New Orleans, as both a solo act and as part of the legendary Neville Brothers, Aaron Neville has been a defining force in the sound of one of America’s greatest music cities. All this help leaves Neville the space to find the heart of each piece without having to carry the load alone. That sort of confidence in his fellow musicians comes from decades gathering knowledge through experience, and the wisdom generated along the way very much informs the material on this album. When an artist with the achievements, accolades and life experiences of Aaron Neville steps to the microphone to share his accumulated thoughts on the meaning of it all, even the most learned soul in earshot would do well to pause and listen.“Be Your Man” kicks off the disc with an authoritative barrel roll of a bass line, and a laser sharp backing band that rises and falls with a deep yet not over-powering resonance. Continuing the use of talent on horns, Neville recreates a sparse late-fifties hi fidelity jam, treading the fine line of jazz and full on crooning with singular balance. On “Orchard In A Storm” the legendary smoothness of Neville’s voice floats over the polished back drop of a gentle rise and fall like early evening waves breaking on shore as he sings of undying love.With as rich of a musical heritage as the city of New Orleans boasts, the catalog of songs written as odes to its idiosyncrasies is long and storied. Neville adds a complex but loving ode, “Stompin’ Ground.” Though most of the song is a jubilant celebration and name checking of the things that make the city what it is, the tune ends on a more stark note. “Sometimes them streets was mean, man,” he speaks with emotional conviction. The naked and raw emotion that peeks through in the last few moments of the the previous tune is on full display in the follow up track, “Heaven,” as Neville begs forgiveness from those he wronged in his long life and hopes to find his way through those exclusive pearly gates.“Hard To Believe” and “Ain’t Gonna Judge You” both come from similar viewpoint of faith, and the importance of truth in all aspects of life. Though he is obviously still a fighter, Neville shows his tender song on “I Wanna Love You.” “It ain’t complicated,” he sings, “I wanna love you,” and it’s spoken with all the charm and earnestness Neville has built a career on helping make his case. The next song, “Sarah Ann,” seems to echo from some distant sock hop, Neville’s trademark warble being used to its most triumphant effect as he reaches the crescendos before giving way to a sweet and swinging organ solo slightly too hip for the era but perfect for the song.Another look back on the past darkly, the strident horns and crisp drum beat of “Make Your Mama Cry” add an element of sad inevitability to the song as Neville tries to sway a wayward soul on a dark and dangerous path. Is he referring to his own troubled past, the issues he sees facing the up and comers, or some sad middle ground? It’s hard to say where his heart was, but the follow-up album closing track “Fragile World” starts with a dramatic spoken word piece that focuses attention on the perils we face as a species from outside our control to within. Lyrically calling back to one of the great musical laments of all time, “What’s Goin’ On” by the late, great sage Marvin Gaye, Neville presents his thoughts in a closing testimonial.Neville once again uses the closing moments of a song to drive his message home. With “Fragile World,” he expands that summation to include this entire collection and in a very real way his entire body of work. He calls for peace on Earth and good will towards everybody, as ragtime jams roll behind him, giving his words a home spun element of shining truth that are impossible to deny. If you were looking for a more fitting encapsulation of the music and message of Aaron Neville, you would be served well with that final snippet.For a musician with over fifty years under his belt, creating fresh material so in tune with the spirit and skill that he has shown over his entire career is as remarkable an achievement as any in Neville’s already inspirational life.
2016 is the year of innovation, and Pizza Hut just proved that with their new high-tech pizza box. The fast food giant teamed up with electronics company Novalia, and together they’ve created a functioning turntable pizza box. That’s right, a pizza box that actually plays music.Using conductive ink, Novalia printed two scratchable decks and controls for playback, pitch, volume, and crossfading right onto the serving apparatus. Even more, you can recycle that battery-powered box right into your computer or phone using Bluetooth, then connect it to any DJ software for it to become your newest source for entertainment. According to Exclaim, exact details of the product’s rollout will be revealed on Twitter. For now, the boxes will only be available at a few select locations in the UK. Last week, Eric Krasno and Marco Benevento joined forces for a double billed run of shows in the Southeast. The two stars ended their run at the Pour House in Charleston, SC on October 22nd, where they had the pleasure of welcoming guitarist Marcus King during the performance. As if Krasno and Benevento weren’t enough to bring out the music loving fans, King has become a rising star and amassed a loyal following as well in the Southeast. This meeting of the minds was surely a remarkable way to spend a Saturday evening.Krasno and King put down a great version of “Them Changes,” and King also sat in for an extended period during Benevento’s set. Phish bassist Mike Gordon wrapped up his fall tour with two red-hot shows at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado, this weekend. Gordon’s quintet—also featuring guitarist Scott Murawski, keyboardist Robert Walter, drummer John Kimock, and percussionist Craig Myers—brought the funky-fresh grooves all weekend long, proving how tight of a unit they have become since Walter and Kimock joined the band in 2015.After announcing that the sold-out Saturday show would be webcast for free via LivePhish, Gordon kicked off the run on Friday night with a space-shifting meaty two sets, intertwining new tracks off of his recently released OGOGO with older fan-favorites and multiple elegantly placed covers. Mike dove head-first into the new material, opening Friday evening with the punchy pop combo of “Steps” and “Up and Down.”The five-member powerhouse then switched up the pace, dropping into a jam-heavy cover of Max Creek’s “Jones” before soaring into “555” and “Babylon Baby”—two songs that have gotten their fair share of attention onstage with Phish. By way of “Angatta”, which showcased Myers on the N’Goni, a unique West African string instrument, Mike Gordon closed the first set of the weekend with “Crazy Sometimes,” a cut off OGOGO that instantly became a fan favorite in the Phish community after the Vermont four-piece debuted it at the infamous Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio.Second set was a particularly high-energy adventure, as “Equilibrium” took off, helping maintain the balance for the remainder of a show that left attendees mind-blown. A cover of Fiona Apple’s “Sleep to Dream” came next followed by “Andelman’s Yard,” an old-school favorite off of Gordon’s 2008 release, Green Sparrow. “Spock’s Brain” and “Normal Phoebe” continued the theme of old-school, both dauntless selections that highlighted a remarkable second set, before Tom Petty and The Heartbreaker’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”, marking its second time played this tour in honor of the late rock icon. Gordon and company ended the second set with “Face,” closing the night out in full with an encore of “Ruby Soho”, a Rancid cover that has become a beloved staple in the quintet’s catalog since its debut nearly 4 weeks ago at Gordon’s Georgia Theatre tour opener. Set one got off to a jaunty start, as OGOGO’s “Whirlwind” and “Victim” got the special treatment, before hopping into another Max Creek cover of “Cruel World.” Tame Impala’s “Mind Mischief” followed, before Gordon made a dicey move, deciding to end the set with “Steps” and “Go Away”—both new tunes that were played the night before. Despite the repeats, a well-executed “Say Something” sandwiched in between the OGOGO rockers was the perfect way to close out the first set of a memorable fall tour closer.Second set got the one-two-three OGOGO treatment, as Gordon dove into “Victim 3D,” “Marissa” and “Pendulum”. Overstep’s “Peel” followed, sandwiching Gordon’s recently debuted “Trapezoidal Sunshine,” highlighted by Gordon and Murawski’s theatrical stage antics, as Gordon dove to the front of the stage on his knees. The Flaming Lips “Are You a Hypnotist??” came next, before Mike Gordon ended the show with “Tiny Little World” and a bolder than life cover of Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion,” leaving the jam-packed theater hooting and hollering for more. Today would have been Gregg Allman‘s 70th birthday. In celebration of his life and legacy, a new music video has been released from the final track of his posthumous album Southern Blood. The “Song For Adam” features a heartwarming collaboration with singer/songwriter Jackson Browne. Browne pays his homage in both blatant and subtle ways, from crafting a song perfect for Allman to providing harmonies on the song itself, essentially backing the icon while arming him with one last bullet.The emotional ballad is about two motorcyclist who are forced to say goodbye due to a sudden death, and is directed by Erica Silverman. Starring Zach Chance (of Jamestown Revival), Yates Robertson, Zoe Graham and Johnny McPhail, the video presents the relationship in both future and present moments–and inevitably pulls heart strings with the memories of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, original members of the Allman Brothers Band who both passed away in motorcycle accidents within a year of each other.In an earlier interview with Rolling Stone, producer Don Was explained the song-picking process for “Song for Adam”, suggesting that Allman chose the song based on the memories of his late brother, Duane Allman, who died in a motorcycle at the age of 24. During the recording process, when Gregg got to the profound lyric, “Still it seems he stopped singing in the middle of his song,” it brought him to a place of emotion–and you can hear it on the recording of the final track. “He wasn’t able to finish the verse,” Was reflects. “He never got the last two lines. I know he was thinking about his brother. We all decided, ‘Let’s not fix it.’”Watch “Song For Adam” below:The passing of Gregg Allman was, as it is for us all, inescapable. The positive at the heart of the tragedy is that he left so many lives richer. Music can be a means of escape, a tool for healing, and an avenue to share feelings far easier than words could ever allow on their own. Through his songs and countless live performances, Allman worked to elevate the spirit while facing all that life could throw at him. Southern Blood, as a last thought on the human condition, is an emotional parting gift from a man who gave everything he could to us all.
Last night, Gov’t Mule continued their New Year’s run with the first of two nights at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The show was energetic from start to finish, with the band welcoming nearly a dozen special guests onto the stage to join them throughout the night.The first guest of the evening was drummer Shawn Pelton, who emerged for “Broke Down On The Brazos” halfway through set one and stayed on ’til the end of the set. Following this number, guitarist Oz Noy and drummer Jeff Babcock came out for a cover of Billy Cobham’s “Stratus” ahead of a cover of Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright”, which featured The Better Half Singers—a group composed of Mini Carlsson and Machan Taylor, both of whom are wives to members of the band. Finishing out set one, Lincoln Schleifer joined Mule, Pelton, and the Better Half Singers for an appropriately chosen rendition of The Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends”.“Bad Little Doggie”[Video: Paul Allegretta]Similar to the first set, the second set started with just the core members of the band fronted by Warren Haynes. However, as the set unfolded, guests again returned to the stage, first during “Easy Times” featuring the Better Half Singers. From there, after “Fool’s Moon”, the band invited out guitarist Jimmy Vivino and drummer Carmine Appice for a take on Free’s “Heartbreaker”. Eventually, bassist Paul Ill also joined in for the next tune, another Free song, “Walk In My Shadow”.With a number of drummers on hand, the second set featured an extensive drums portion that allowed Appice, Pelton, and Matt Abts to be featured before landing in a cover of the Allman Brothers Band’s “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” that saw Pelton and Vivino joining the group. This past Saturday, January 6th at Radio City Music Hall in New York, music fans from all over came together for an evening of charitable giving and fantastic music at A Concert For Island Relief. The show featured performances from Hurray For The Riff Raff, Aaron Neville, Trey Anastasio Band and, finally, a Dave Matthews solo acoustic set to close the evening.Trey Anastasio Shares Heartwarming Post About Tortola Visit Following Concert For Island ReliefHowever, while Dave’s set was predominantly a solo affair (aside from some added brass on “Mercy”, “Satellite”, and “Save Me”), the highlight of his set came at its end, when he returned to the stage and invited Anastasio to join him for a duet on the first of four encore songs.Trey took the stage with an acoustic guitar, and together the two ran through a beautiful version of Phish‘s “Waste”, written by Anastasio and Tom Marshall more than twenty years ago. Following the performance, which saw Trey and Dave trade verses before harmonizing on the chorus and bridge sections, Dave giddily leaned in to the microphone.”That’s Trey,” he remarked, pointing to Anastasio. “That’s my favorite song.”That assertion from Matthews has plenty of historical background. Dave Matthews Band covered the song 15 times on their 2001 tour, and two more times in 2002.
