Staub Powers Argonauts to Double Header Sweep

first_img April 28, 2007 Box Score  FLORENCE, Ala. – Valerie Staub (East Brunswick, N.J./Wallace-Dothan CC) hit a two out, three-run home run in the top of the first inning to help lead West Florida to a 5-3 win over North Alabama on Saturday at Cox Creek Park. With the win, West Florida (32-23, 12-10 GSC) moved into sole possession of third place in the Gulf South Conference East Division. North Alabama (32-19, 11-10 GSC) was swept at home for the second time in their last three conference double headers.West Florida can clinch the third seed from the GSC East Division for next week’s conference tournament by winning at least one game in Sunday’s double header at Alabama-Huntsville. The Argonauts could also clinch if Valdosta State sweeps their double header at North Alabama on Sunday. North Alabama must at least split against Valdosta State to advance to the tournament.After only scoring four runs over the first three games of the series, West Florida put together a three-run first inning. After two outs, Taren Walton (Pensacola, Fla./Daytona Beach CC) singled and Nicky Van Camp (Davenport, Iowa/Kirkwood CC) drew a walk. Staub then deposited a Sabrina Roberts two strike pitch over the right center field fence for the early 3-0 lead.West Florida added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning. Walton led off by reaching on a two-base error. After Roberts retired the next two batters, Ellen Marsh (Ankeny, Iowa/Central Florida CC) brought in Walton on an RBI double. Julie Carroll (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Liberty Univ.) followed with an RBI single to increase West Florida’s lead to 5-0.West Florida’s two-run sixth inning proved to be the difference as North Alabama brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Emily Beckwith and Allie Pridmore recorded consecutive singles. After Kim Lee grounded into a fielder’s choice for the second out, Lindsey Greene walked to load the bases, and Sarah Whitlow also walked to force in the Lions first run. Jessica Liddy followed with a two-run single to left field to cut the West Florida lead to two. But with Lindsey Bates representing the winning run at the plate, Emily Burge (Pace, Fla./Pace HS) induced her to fly out to left field to end the game. It was West Florida’s first double header sweep against a GSC East Division opponent this season.Burge (14-13) earned her first win since Apr. 13 against South Arkansas. She allowed three runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in a complete game win. Roberts (11-9) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) with one walk and six strikeouts over six innings. Stephanie Glienke pitched an inning of scoreless relief. Marsh and North Alabama’s Sarah Whitlow each finished 3-3 with an RBI.West Florida will complete the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Alabama-Huntsville. First pitch of the double header is set for 12 p.m. CST. The two teams split a double header in Pensacola on Mar. 31.
