CALLS MADE FOR RESTORATION OF BUNBEG CLIFF RESCUE SERVICE

first_imgThe Bunbeg Coast Guard Cliff Rescue service ceased its operation in 2012 due to a value for money review by the Department of Transport. However, since its closure the decision has continued to raise considerable concern locally.Thomas Pringle, Independent TD for Donegal says that while the number of call outs may have been low when the review was carried out it did not take into account the potential for a successful adventure tourism industry to develop locally especially now with the Wild Atlantic Way established.‘There is concern that the cessation of the cliff rescue in Bunbeg could impact on the tourism potential of the area. New adventure tourism businesses are concerned that the lack of availability of a rescue service could impact on people’s decisions whether to book a holiday or event in this part of Donegal’ continues Pringle.Cllr Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig who has been campaigning on the issue says ‘the importance of the service and the need to have the cliff rescue service restored cannot be understated. We have to think in terms of safety for the local people and for visitors to this part of Donegal. It would also mean a significant boost in confidence in the area.’Thomas Pringle TD and Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig have written to the Minister calling on him to give serious consideration to restarting the cliff rescue training in Bunbeg.
