Kovacic Nows not the time to consider my future

first_imgMateo Kovacic is happy at Chelsea right now and insists that his future is not the priority for the time beingThe 24-year-old midfielder is on a season-long loan deal at Chelsea after struggling to earn regular opportunities at parent club Real Madrid.Kovacic has since enjoyed an impressive start to life at Stamford Bridge with rumours indicating that a permanent deal may come to fruition in the summer. But the Croatia international plans to remain focused on the present rather than what his future could hold.Jose Mourinho is sold on Lampard succeeding at Chelsea Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho wanted to give his two cents on Frank Lampard’s odds as the new Chelsea FC manager, he thinks he will succeed. There really…“I wanted to be happy and at Chelsea I am,” Kovacic told Marca.“I just wanted to be happy and play matches, feel a responsibility within the team and I’ve found that at Chelsea.“This is not the time to talk about anything other than playing and enjoying. Wijnaldum Liverpool are not focusing on title battle

first_imgLiverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum insists they are focusing on themselves and not on Manchester City’s results ahead of tonight’s game at WolvesAfter 17 games, Jurgen Klopp’s side remains unbeaten with a one-point advantage over City at the top of the Premier League. But Wijnaldum, who impressed in last Sunday’s 3-1 win against Manchester United, says Liverpool are only keeping focus on themselves. And the Dutchman expects a stern challenge from Wolves, who defeated Chelsea 2-1 earlier this month at home.“This season we didn’t think about getting close to City,” Wijnaldum told the club website.divock origi, liverpoolReport: Origi cause Klopp injury concerns George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Divock Origi injury in today’s game against Newcastle is a cause for concern for Jurgen Klopp.Perhaps with one eye on Tuesday’s trip to Italy…“When we were in the future situations [playing after them], or in this case to go four points ahead.“We don’t really think about that, we just want to play the game and try to win the game and then we will see what will happen at the end of the week. We just have to make sure we win our game, that’s the only thing we have to do.“I think Wolves have shown already against the ‘big’ teams that they are a good playing side, especially at home, so it’s going to be a really, really tough game.“We know we have to be 100 per cent concentrated to win that game.”A win tonight at Molineux will move Liverpool four points clear over City, who face Crystal Palace on Saturday.last_img read more

Captain Marvel postcredits scenes explained

first_img How to watch every Marvel Cinematic Universe film in the right order Tags 21 TV and Movies What it meansIt would seem Captain Marvel was indeed at the other end of that pager, as everyone had assumed at the end of Infinity War. It also appears Carol survived the snap. In one of the last Captain Marvel scenes, Carol gives Fury an upgraded version of his pager, telling him to use it if he ever needs her to come back. So, is this an actual scene from Avengers: Endgame, a heavily edited version of a scene, or something filmed exclusively for the Captain Marvel postcredits scene? It’s difficult to say, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this isn’t exactly how Carol’s arrival on Earth plays out in Avengers: Endgame. Nevertheless, it was awesome. captain-marvel-tv-spot-thumbCarol takes her hero shot.  Marvel Scene 2: Cute and slightly disgustingWe start the scene with a tight front shot of Nick Fury’s desk from 1995. The nameplate simply says “N. Fury” on the front. His office appears to be completely vacated. The camera slowly zooms in, and Goose the cat enters the frame. Like all cats do, especially mine — a lot lately, annoyingly — he begins to cough up a hairball. After few seconds of heaving, he coughs up the Tesseract onto Fury’s desk. After a beat, the film ends. What it meansIn the movie, Goose the cat is revealed to be a Flerken. That’s an alien species that looks like a cat but can devour things with huge tentacles that come out of its mouth. During the movie, Goose swallows the Tesseract to keep it away from Star Force — the Kree’s Seal Team 6, led by Jude Law’s Yon-Rogg, which Carol is a member of at the beginning of the movie. If only they all knew what this actually was… 26 Photoscenter_img Comments Captain Marvel is a fantastic addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe of movies, with great performances, fantastic action, one of the best stories of any MCU movie so far and the real 90s independent movie feel. As expected, it also had two postcredits scenes. The first will probably get you even more excited about Avengers: Endgame than you already are, and the second is more of a humorous bookend to the film. Definitely stay for the first one. The second one is up to you. I will say this, though: the second one is a lot better than the second postcredits scene in Ant-man and the Wasp. And now, a huge, Quadjet-size spoiler warning if you’d rather go into the movie (and maybe Avengers: Endgame?) cold. Composite by Aaron Robinson  Scene 1: Carol Danvers, allow me to introduce you to…The scene starts with a closeup of Fury’s pager from the end of Avengers: Infinity War. It’s still beeping and Captain Marvel’s symbol is still on the screen. Suddenly the pager screen goes black. We then cut to Steve Rogers and Black Widow looking over some holographic images, still getting data on how many people are dead after Thanos’ snap. Marvel Cinematic Universe postcredits scenes, rankedRhodey then enters the room and tells them the pager is no longer sending a signal. We see Bruce Banner, who says whatever signal it was sending finally crapped out. nullCaptain Marvel just caught the train to the billion dollar club. Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios “I thought we bypassed the battery,” Cap says. Replies Rhodey, “Well, we did. It’s still plugged in, just stopped.” Cap tells them to reboot it and send the signal again. Black Widow says the message was obviously important to Fury and to tell her the second they get the pager working again. “I want to know who’s on the end of that thing,” she says. Black Widow then turns to leave, and standing right in front of her is Captain Marvel looking pissed off. After a beat she asks, “Where’s Fury?” The scene ends. Share your voice Captain Marvel Marvellast_img read more

Im alive to finish unfinished jobs of my father Hasina

first_imgAwami League president and the eldest daughter of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman speaks at a blood donation programme on the premises of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi Road No 32 in the capital on Wednesday. Photo: Focus BanglaReiterating that she never cares about death, Bangladesh Awami League (AL) president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said she is alive to finish the unfinished jobs of her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, reports UNB.”I faced several blows in the past. Maybe there’ll be more but I don’t care… I never care about death. I’m alive to finish the unfinished jobs of my father, bring smile to the faces of country’s people, change their fate and give the country a dignified position in the world arena,” said Hasina.Sheikh Hasina, the eldest daughter of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, said this while inaugurating a blood donation programme organised by Bangladesh Krishak League on the premises of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi Road No 32.Hasina said the debt of Bangabandhu’s blood could be paid through building the country as ‘Golden Bangladesh’ as he had dreamt. “We’ve to pay his blood debt…we’ll be able to pay his debt of blood by building the country as Golden Bangladesh. InshaAllah, we’ll be able to do that; I have that belief,” she said. She said the country has already made a good progress in its journey towards its goal of being ‘Golden Bangladesh’. “We’ll advance the country further.”Sheikh Hasina, also the chief of ruling Awami League, sought cooperation of people in maintaining the pace of development that the country attained in the last nine and a half years.”We want you to pray for us… the pace of development we’ve attained must not be stopped. We can fulfill Father of the Nation’s dream of ‘Golden Bangladesh’ through maintaining the pace of progress,” she said. The prime minister firmly said she can say that Bangladesh now got a dignified position in the world and the country is now a developing one. “Surely, the souls of my father, mother and millions of martyrs will get peace,” she added.Recalling the horrible memories of 15 August 1975, she said the defeated force of 1971 and freedom fighters by chance who never contain the spirit of the Liberation War were the mastermind of this massacre. “The defeated force took their revenge through killing the Father of the Nation,” she said.Sheikh Hasina mentioned that the killers thought that the existence of Bangladesh would be vanished with the killing the father of the nation. She said the government has been able to put the killers of Bangabandhu under trial and implement the court verdict. “Still, there’re some killers hiding in various countries. We’re trying to bring them home,” she said.Hasina alleged that the self-claimed and convicted killers mentioned that they had communication with Ziaur Rahman and they had informed him about the killing. “Zia told them to go ahead, and said if they become successful he is with them,” she said. She said Ziaur Rahman awarded the killers by appointing them in different missions. “Why did he give them award? He was fully involved in the killing. That’s why he gave them award,” she said.Sheikh Hasina also said the consequence of Ziaur Rahman was inevitable for him. “My sorrow is that I couldn’t put him under trial. He passed away before that,” she added.last_img read more

Family University Must Disarm Officers After Fatality

first_imgBy The Associated PressPORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The family of a Black man who was fatally shot by Portland State University campus police on Friday demanded that the university immediately disarm its campus officers.Jason Erik Washington was shot on June 29 while trying to break up a fight outside a bar near the university’s downtown campus.Jason Erik Washington (Courtesy Photo/Facebook)In the family’s first public statements on the shooting, Washington’s brother compared the incident to other high-profile shootings of Black men, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported .Family members attended a news conference and stood side-by-side wearing T-shirts bearing Washington’s image as Andre Washington spoke.“What this community experienced on the morning of June 29, 2018 is not uncommon in this city and around the country,” said Andre Washington said. “Black men being gunned down by White police officers is an affliction in America.”The family also demanded that the two officers involved, identified by the university as Shawn McKenzie and James Dewey, be fired.McKenzie and Dewey were placed on paid administrative leave following the shooting.Authorities have not said how many bullets were fired or whose shots hit Washington. The Portland Police Bureau is investigating the shooting.Cellphone video shot by a witness shows Washington repeatedly trying to restrain a friend as a group of other men follow them down a sidewalk. It seems as if Washington is about to succeed in getting his friend inside and away from a fight when the friend breaks away and swings at someone and is knocked to the ground.Washington enters the fray and is knocked the ground. As he falls, a black object can be seen in his hip pocket. The camera jerks away from the action shortly after the fall and doesn’t show the shooting, but someone can be heard shouting, “Gun!”Witness Keyaira Smith told several news outlets that the object was a gun. Washington was shot as he was trying to retrieve it from the sidewalk, she has said.Washington, a Navy veteran, a father of three, a grandfather and an employee of the U.S. Postal Service, had a valid license to carry a concealed weapon in Multnomah County, where Portland is located.“Jason Washington supported the Second Amendment. Jason Washington supported social issues. And perhaps the most ironic of all, Jason Washington supported the police,” his brother said. “Think about that.”The university issued a statement after the rally, saying that PSU offers its “deepest condolences to Jason Washington’s family.”“We fully recognize the severity of what has occurred,” the statement said. “We understand there are a lot of unanswered questions right now, and it’s very important to answer them. That’s why it’s important to have multiple comprehensive investigations.”PSU students staged an earlier protest over the university’s decision to arm its campus police. The university’s board of trustees voted in 2015 to arm its police force over objections from students.A vigil was planned for later Friday at the location where Washington was shot.___Information from: KOPB-FM, http://news.opb.orglast_img read more

Iron rods go through masons body as he falls from roof finds

first_imgKolkata: Three iron rods pierced the body of a mason after he fell from the roof of an under-construction building at Champahati area of Baruipur in the South 24-Parganas district on Wednesday morning. The victim, identified as Uday Sardar, was immediately taken to the Baruipur Super-Specialty Hospital by the local people. The doctors in the hospital did not want to take any risk as the patient still had the three iron rods that had gone through the right side of his abdomen. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeThe victim was then taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH), where a digital x-ray was performed on the patient. It was not easy for the technicians to carry out the x-ray as he had to be kept in a seated posture. The doctors at CNMCH successfully removed the three rods from his body, following a critical surgery that lasted for hours. The patient, however, is still stated to be in a critical condition due to the severe nature of his injuries. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedAfter examining the reports, the doctors at the hospital found that one rod was located near his kidney, while another was close to his intestine. The third one was below his liver. The hospital authorities felt the need of an emergency surgery but there were many challenges before them.A medical board has been formed, comprising 7 doctors including the head of the department of general surgery and the heads of the Orthopedic department, Cardiothorasic department, Neuro surgery and Urology department of the hospital. The medical board was in a fix as the iron rods were nearly 3 feet long. The main concern for the doctors was removing the rods as it could make the patient bleed to death.Senior PWD engineers were asked to rush to the hospital and see if they could make the rods shorter in length by cutting them from both ends, as it would have been extremely difficult for the doctors to remove the rods otherwise. The PWD engineers, however, told the doctors that cutting the rods which had already pierced his body, might damage the organs due to the vibration which will be created. The medical board later started the operation on Wednesday evening, with the PWD engineers inside the OT. A huge quantity of blood was arranged by the hospital authorities before starting the operation.A senior official of the hospital said that the iron rods have been removed successfully.last_img read more

Diya or lamp is lit in the main altar of the house. Along with the diyas, copper vase called Gagri is kept filled with water and decorated with flowers. Several groups of girls dressed in traditional Gunue Cholo sit outside the main entrance of houses and sing the traditional “Bhailo.” The next day of Gai Tiwar or Laxmi Puja is the Goru Tiwar — the day dedicated to the ox. Keeping his word, King Bali gave away his kingdom to Lord Vishnu. The girls of his kingdom fearing destruction, in groups, prayed to Goddess Lakshmi to bestow the kingdom with riches so that its lost glory could be regained. “I do not usually return home during Dussehra but try my best to get leaves for Tiwar. •  Investors like MLPs because of their high yield

first_img •  Investors like MLPs because of their high yields… Regular readers know that the Federal Reserve cut its key interest rate to zero in 2008. It’s left it there ever since. This pushed interest rates to ridiculously low levels, making it difficult for investors to earn a decent yield. Take the 10-year Treasury, for example. In 2007, its yield averaged 4.63%. Today, it yields just 2.05%. From the beginning of 2009 through June 2014 (when energy prices peaked), AMZ returned 294%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 returned just 110%. One big reason for AMZ’s great performance is that MLPs were one of the only investments where investors could earn a decent yield. Many investors bought MLPs thinking they were safe ways to invest in America’s booming energy sector. After all, MLPs were supposed to earn steady income streams that didn’t depend on the price of oil, natural gas, or coal… Earlier this year, The Wall Street Journal explained why MLPs are supposed to be insulated from volatile energy prices. To manage swings in fuel prices, the partnerships have contracts that guarantee them minimum prices for oil and gas. Such contracts, or hedges, will help them weather lower prices in the near term. In the same article, The Wall Street Journal noted that many of those hedges expired in 2015. That’s been a big problem. The price of oil has fallen 48% over the past year. And the price of natural gas has fallen 39%. Many MLPs are now exposed to these weak prices. And it’s starting to show up on their income statements: Energy Transfer Partners (ETP) is a pipeline MLP worth $22 billion. The company’s quarterly revenues fell by an average of 43% during the first two quarters of 2015. Last year, the company averaged 13% quarterly revenue growth during the first and second quarters. Magellan Midstream Partners (MMP) is a pipeline MLP worth $16 billion. Its quarterly revenues dropped 9% during the first and second quarters of 2015. Last year, the company’s revenues increased 27% on average during the same two quarters. MarkWest Energy Partners (MWE) is another pipeline MLP. It’s worth $9 billion. Its quarterly revenues fell by 10% on average during the first two quarters of 2015. Last year, the company’s revenues increased 31% on average during the first two quarter. •  MLPs have crashed with the rest of the energy market… The chart below shows the performance of AMZ over the past year. As you can see, it’s down 36% in just twelve months. Regards, Justin Spittler Delray Beach, Florida October 06, 2015 We want to hear from you. If you have a question or comment, please send it to feedback@caseyresearch.com. We read every email that comes in, and we’ll publish comments, questions, and answers that we think other readers will find useful. – Urgent Announcement: Banking Insider Warns: “If you were born before 1969, you should move 20% of your savings here now.” More than 60,000 Americans are now following “Ronald Reagan’s Secret Retirement Income Plan,” and moving their money out of the traditional financial system into one little-known safe haven where wealth grows tax-free… This 100% legal “tax shelter” has proven—over 232 years—to protect and grow wealth in times of recession, depression, inflation, and even dollar weakness.  Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and at least 52 other Washington officials have already moved a portions of their cash here…  The big banks have already moved $143 billion here… and plan to move billions more. Now, you can find out all the details for FREE. Click here to claim your free starter kit. The “toll takers” of the energy industry have crashed… The Alerian MLP Index (AMZ) lost 22% last quarter. It was the index’s worst quarter ever. AMZ lost an incredible 15% in September alone. AMZ tracks 50 of the biggest master-limited partnerships, or MLPs. Most MLPs act as “toll roads” for the energy sector. Natural gas pipeline companies are a common type of MLP. Unlike natural gas producers that look for natural gas and pull it out of the ground, a pipeline MLP helps move natural gas from one place to another. These companies typically charge a set fee for each cubic foot of gas they transport, regardless of the price of natural gas. MLPs trade on public stock exchanges, but they’re a little different from most stocks. They don’t pay corporate taxes. And they have to distribute nearly all of their income to investors. Because of this unique structure, MLPs generally pay high yields. AMZ currently yields 7.99%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 yields just 2.25%. •  The market for MLPs has exploded in recent years… The number of MLPs jumped from 32 in 2003 to over 100 last year. And between 2008 and 2014, the value of the MLP industry jumped from under $100 billion to over $500 billion. America’s booming energy market helped fuel this explosive growth. Regular readers know that U.S. oil production has more than doubled over the past six years. U.S. natural gas production also jumped 40% between 2004 and 2014. More oil and natural gas production means more oil and natural gas must be processed, transported, and stored…which benefits MLPs. The U.S. is digging itself in deeper and deeper.” Click here to learn more. — A big reason for the selling is that investors are worried MLPs will cut their payouts. So far, that hasn’t happened… Not one midstream MLP cut its distribution from the beginning of 2014 through the second quarter of 2015. In fact, the 25 midstream MLPs tracked by the index actually raised distributions a total of 111 times during that timeframe. • But that doesn’t mean you should buy MLPs… E.B. Tucker, editor of The Casey Report explains why MLPs are dangerous: Many investors blindly buy MLPs for their rich yields without understanding what they’re buying… MLPs are legally required to pay out at least 90% of their profits to investors. After MLPs pay investors, there’s almost no money left to invest back in the business. That means MLPs have only two options when they need money to pay for repairs, maintenance, and upgrades. They can issue new stock, or they can raise money by selling bonds. Neither option is attractive for MLP investors. The bond market doesn’t want to loan MLPs money right now. MLPs that desperately needs cash are going to pay out the nose to get it. The only other choice is to issue more shares…which reduces the value of existing shares. Chart of the Day MLPs pay some of the highest yields in the market… Today’s chart compares AMZ’s yield to other types of investments. As you can see, MLPs pay roughly triple what stocks in the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) yield. MLPs also pay twice as much as real estate investment trusts (REITs) and utilities. However, this doesn’t mean MLPs are a good investment. As we explained earlier, MLPs have several problems including falling revenues and a lack of good financing options. We don’t recommend buying MLPs as a group at today’s prices.last_img read more

The next time you swat a fruit fly in your kitchen

first_imgThe next time you swat a fruit fly in your kitchen, take heart from the fact that people have apparently been struggling with these fly infestations for around 10,000 years.A study published Thursday suggests Drosophila melanogaster first shacked up with humans when the insects flew into the elaborately painted caves of ancient people living in southern Africa. That’s according to a report published Thursday in the journal Current Biology.Scientists say the flies would have been following the alluring smell of stored marula fruit, which were collected and stored by cave-dwelling people in Africa. This tasty yellow fruit was a staple in the region in those days — and was also the fruit that wild flies apparently evolved to depend on in nearby forests. The humble fruit fly now lives with humans all over the planet and is one of the world’s most studied creatures. For more than a century, biology and medical laboratories have depended on this fly — one scientist notes that at least nine times, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded for research on Drosophila. One of those prizes was won by Thomas Hunt Morgan of Columbia University, whose fly research in the early 1900s plucked this species from obscurity and transformed it into a mainstay of genetics.”It’s small; it’s cheap to raise; it has interesting genetics,” explains Thomas Kaufman, a biologist at Indiana University in Bloomington. “We think that flies are quite charismatic. They’re wonderful. They’re beautiful little animals, and we love them. Seriously.”But despite all that love and study, the origins of this fly, and how it first moved in with people, have been a mystery.”I’ve been wondering about this for the past 20 years,” says Marcus Stensmyr, a biologist at Lund University in Sweden who uses these flies to study the olfactory system. “It’s really been kind of a life-long ambition, if you wish, to find where they come from.”Scientists have known for decades that, like people, the flies seem to have started out in Africa — somewhere.”You find them in your kitchen. You find them in my kitchen — you find them in everyone’s kitchen,” says Stensmyr. “But if you go out into the forest, you simply don’t find them.”Recently, researchers collected flies from around Africa and looked at their genes. They found that the greatest genetic diversity was found in flies from Zambia and Zimbabwe, suggesting that this species got its start in the southern-central region of the continent. But trips to that region failed to turn up much of anything.”After a number of failed excursions down to Africa,” says Stensmyr, “we thought, ‘OK, so maybe they are associated with some specific fruit in their original home.’ “Stensmyr and his colleagues studied a long list of possible fruits, looking for all the features that D. melanogaster is known to prefer. The flies favor citrus fruits — like oranges, for example.”We came to a candidate fruit — that was marula fruit,” says Stensmyr. The yellow fruit is about the size of a large plum, with a hard stone in the middle. “It has a sweet and nice taste.”The researchers traveled to the woodlands of the Matobo National Park in Zimbabwe. They found fruiting marula trees and put out traps. Bingo — they caught D. melanogaster.”We found tons of flies,” Stensmyr recalls.Further study showed that wild D. melanogaster strongly prefer marula fruit over oranges. What’s more, so does a breed of fly that’s commonly used in labs. This strain was established in 1916 from a fly population in Canton, Ohio.”They actually have retained the preference for marula,” says Stensmyr. “They would go for the marula as well.”The researchers isolated one particular chemical in this fruit — ethyl isovalerate — that seemed particularly important. Flies that were given a choice between marula and oranges spiked with this chemical failed to pick one over the other, suggesting that the two choices seemed the same to the flies. All of this provides an intriguing clue for how these insects may have started to make their home with people. Near where the researchers found the wild flies, there are caves where the San tribes once lived. These people left behind beautiful cave paintings — as well as the pits of marula fruit that they had eaten. From one cave alone, excavators turned up 24 million marula stones.”They really, really loved marula,” says Stensmyr, who points out that the stones found date from about 12,000 years ago to about 8,000 years ago. “During the times when these caves were inhabited, the San people must have brought enormous quantities of marula into the caves.”That means marula was likely stored there, and available there long after the marula in the forest had been eaten up by wildlife. The strong smell of all this marula would have attracted the flies. To test whether or not wild flies would actually enter a cave, the research team put traps baited with fermenting marula along the far wall of the Nswatugi cave. Sure enough, over a period of a few days, these traps caught a number of D. melanogaster flies. The study, and the story it tells, has completely delighted other scientists who study fruit flies.”I particularly liked going and catching the flies in the painted caves,” says Kaufman. “That was inspired. It’s really a neat paper.””I thought it was fantastic,” agrees Celeste Berg, a developmental geneticist at the University of Washington, Seattle who has used flies in her research for 30 years. “I thought their data was really quite striking.”Berg says she wonders exactly how the flies would have spread from these caves to the rest of the world.”I think it’s exciting to learn the origins of fruit flies and, even if you’re not an ecologist or a population geneticist, I think it’s just natural to be interested in the history of the organism you study,” says Berg. “I had assumed that fruit flies liked all kinds of fruit — especially bananas. I didn’t even realize that they preferred citrus. And it’s not even really citrus that they prefer; they prefer this particular marula plant, which I also had never heard of.”Debbie Andrew, a developmental biologist at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine who has worked with fruit flies for four decades, also says she loved the paper.”They built a good story,” says Andrew. “It’s very hard to prove something that happened 10,000 years ago or more. I like the story.”As to whether all the details are right, she says, “I don’t know; it does seem plausible, based on the amount of marula fruit stones they found in the cave.”Based on this paper, says Andrew, the old saying, “time flies like an arrow, and fruit flies like a banana,” should really be changed.”Time flies like an arrow,” she says, “and fruit flies like an orange, or a marula fruit, or perhaps an orange spiked with ethyl isovalerate.” Copyright 2018 NPR. Other leading smartphone firms like Samsung and Apple have also recently moved to use their own CPUs in their phones. But they all use a common architecture for these chipsets developed by the British firm ARM, which is now a unit of Japan’s Softbank. The dedicated graphics processor also uses ARM architecture.MemoryThe RAM memory used by the processor is made by South Korea’s SK Hynix, although previous versions of Huawei’s top-line phones have used components from the US firm Micron.Micron, like fellow US firms Qualcomm and Intel, has announced it will no longer supply Huawei in line with government directives.ConnectivityHuawei doesn’t produce the wifi and Bluetooth antennas and modems used in smartphones, the standards of which are decided by associations of manufacturers. The US firms Qualcomm and Intel are the major manufacturers for wifi modems for high-end smartphones. Operating systemsWith the exception of Apple, almost all other smartphones manufacturers use Android, the open source operating system developed by Google. The P30 uses the latest version, 9, called Pie. Like most smartphones companies, Huawei adapts Android slightly to create a unique user experience. The two largest manufacturers of such screens are South Korea’s Samsung and LG. Huawei buys the screens for the P30 from Samsung.Like many smartphone manufacturers, Huawei uses a chemically strengthened Gorilla Glass developed by the US firm Corning to cover the screen to protect it from scratches and breaking.
