first_imgLong-serving Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei has been released from his contract and will link up with Salford in the English Super League. The iconic try-scorer was originally contracted until the end of the 2018 NRL season but asked the Warriors for an early release in order to join Salford.British media reported last week that a deal had been done between Vatuvei and Salford, who are owned by businessman and racehorse owner Marwan Koukash, are second on the Super League table.A fan favourite at Mt Smart Stadium for well over a decade, 31-year-old Vatuvei has been restricted to just one NRL appearance this year due to injury.”Manu is a club legend,” Warriors managing director Jim Doyle said.”We didn’t make this decision lightly, but after years of fantastic service to the Warriors, he’s decided the time is right to head overseas and we didn’t want to stand in his way.”We wish him all the best for his future and while he will soon be lining up for Salford, he’ll always be a Warrior in our eyes.”After making his first-grade debut in 2004, Vatuvei, Warrior No 115, made 226 appearances for the club.Known as The Beast, Vatuvei quickly became a potent attacking threat on the Warriors’ left wing and in 2015 became the first player in NRL history to complete the feat of scoring 10 tries or more in 10 consecutive seasons. That same year, he became just the third player to appear in 200 games for the Warriors.Vatuvei also leaves New Zealand’s shores as the Warriors’ all-time leading try-scorer with 152 tries. Rugby legend Jonah Lomu has street named after him

first_imgIn a close ceremony with family and friends of the great man present, a church minister officially blessed Jonah Lomu Drive.Lomu’s wife, Nadene was present with their two boys Dhyreille and Brayley, and she had this to say of the honour: “Jonah was a very big but humble person. I think he would probably be quite shy of something like this, but I think it’s very deserving and most humbling to see. We’re really excited to see the development grow and for the children to learn more about the school that their dad was a part of – and for the street sign to be put up.“There’s just so much significance here, which is really special to be a part of. To be able to say that there is a street named after Jonah Lomu in New Zealand, I think it is a wonderful thing.“I also think it’s a very fitting tribute to Jonah for the imprint that he’s left on many heart of the old boys here at Wesley and the ones who are presently here. But also for the generations to come through.”No doubt Jonah left an imprint on New Zealand, but also the world when he burst onto the rugby scene at the 1995 World Cup where he scored seven tries in five games, four of which came against England. His running over of Mike Catt has to be one of the most memorable moments of rugby history.Considering Lomu’s impact on New Zealand, having a street named after him is a fitting tribute to a man who was taken too soon.last_img read more

The recruitment decisions that turned the NRL on its head

first_imgThe same goes for St George Illawarra, Wests Tigers and Newcastle, who are all flying high at or near the top of the Telstra Premiership ladder after failing to make the NRL finals in recent seasons. The success of the unbeaten Warriors and Dragons, coupled with that of the Tigers, Sydney Roosters, Gold Coast and Knights, highlights how a strategically targeted recruitment plan can dramatically change the fortunes of an NRL club.Besides third-placed Penrith, those six clubs are the only ones with more wins than losses so far this season and they were the most prominent movers in the biggest off-season transfer market since the Super League war.In comparison, clubs who performed strongly last season and didn’t recruit heavily, or whose strategy appeared ad hoc, are struggling, with Melbourne, North Queensland, Brisbane, Parramatta and Cronulla in the bottom half of the premiership table. The Storm (ninth) chose to replace Cooper Cronk from within, the Broncos (12th) took the same approach after losing Ben Hunt and the Cowboys (14th) merely added prop Jordan McLean, who is out for three months with a foot injury. The Eels, who are last and yet to win a game this season, signed Jarryd Hayne but it wasn’t obvious where he would fit into a backline which helped the club to a fourth-place finish in 2017.The Sharks (11th) recruited two top-line fullbacks in Josh Dugan and Matt Moylan when they already had Valentine Holmes, and then seized on the opportunity to sign former NSW Origin playmaker Trent Hodkinson from Newcastle. While Moylan was intended to replace James Maloney at five-eighth, he, Dugan and Holmes have already each played a game at fullback.Canterbury (15th) also have two players the club initially signed as fullbacks, in Brett Morris and Will Hopoate, playing other positions after new coach Dean Pay decided to switch halfback Moses Mbye there this season.Possibly the two most influential rostering decisions on the early season results were the Bulldogs recruitment of Kieran Foran and Aaron Woods at the expense of Josh Reynolds and James Graham. This didn’t just cost the Bulldogs two players considered the heart and soul of the club but it enabled the Dragons to pick up a forward leader in Graham and the Warriors to replace Foran with Manly’s Blake Green. The Dragons had already identified the need to recruit a top-class halfback and targeted Hunt, who they signed before the start of the 2017 season from Brisbane on a reported $6 million, five-year deal. Many questioned Hunt’s value but comparisons between how the Broncos are performing without him and how the Dragons are playing with him suggests he was worth the investment. After failing to make the NRL finals since 2011, the Warriors began their 2018 recruitment after the appointment of Stephen Kearney as coach at the end of the 2016 season and Tohu Harris agreed to terms more than a year ago.The Warriors focused on building a squad with greater depth and experience, and Kearney has added seven new faces, including forwards Agnatius Paasi and Leivaha Pulu, who have proved revelations since moving from the Titans.Kiwis prop Adam Blair and centre Peta Hiku have also played key roles in the revival of the Warriors – who last Saturday posted the biggest attendance at Mt Smart Stadium since 1995 – along with Green, who is being touted as the buy of the year and a contender for the NSW No.6 jersey. The Knights also had a strategy of bolstering the wooden spooners of the past three seasons with proven match-winners and recruited heavily from the Cowboys, Broncos, Storm and Roosters. The key signing was NSW Origin halfback Mitchell Pearce, who left the Roosters after the Bondi-based club decided they were a better chance of winning the premiership with Cronk playing alongside Blues fullback James Tedesco.Losing Tedesco, Woods and Eels halfback Mitchell Moses appeared to be a blow for the Wests Tigers but it gave coach Ivan Cleary an opportunity to focus strongly on recruitment for 2018 from the time of his appointment early last season. With Russell Packer, Ben Mautulino, Benji Marshall, Tuimoala Lolohea, Pita Godinet, Corey Thompson, Mahe Fonua and Chris McQueen joining Josh Reynolds, who is yet to play, the Tigers have lost just one game.Gold Coast coach Garth Brennan was only given the job last October but he has worked quickly to improve the club’s roster, with Bryce Cartwright, Leilani Latu and Mitch Rein following him from the Panthers. In addition, Brennan has already signed star Penrith utility Tyrone Peachey for next season, while the Roosters lured backrower Angus Crichton from South Sydney and the Knights have recruited Sharks centre Jesse Ramien for 2019.The views in this article do not necessarily express the opinions of the ARLC, NRL, NRL clubs or State associations.last_img read more

Valverde sets the bar very high for Setién: he leaves with 81 leading days of 95

first_imgQuique Setién will have to put the batteries quickly and more taking into account how this directive is spent, which has given clear signs of prioritizing the results over the game. And is that if we talk about the result, and more specifically, in The league, competition in which the Cantabrian coach will be released this Sunday against Granada (21 hours) in the Camp Nou, the role of Setién is to start to tremble. Barcelona has been nine consecutive days as leader, has finished the equator of the season with the honorary title of winter champion and is the most scoring team (49), with an abysmal difference from the second, Real Madrid (36). LaLiga Santander* Data updated as of January 15, 2020 In fact, since Valverde arrived in Barcelona two and a half seasons ago, Barcelona has become the real roller in the championship. One fact is enough to reflect the enormous superiority of the Blaugrana in LaLiga: of the 95 days that Valverde led the team was a leader in a total of 81. This overwhelming domain served him to win the last two titles several days in advance.Only fourteen times he did not lead the table: two (2017/18), three (2018/19) and nine (2019/20), being the Real Madrid the second team with the most leaders (6), ahead of Seville (5), while the rest (Athletic, Real society, Athletic Y Pomegranate) must conform to a leadership. There is no doubt that the pressure in this aspect for the new coach will be maximum, since it does not come to save a team in the lower area of the table, but to consolidate the leadership of a club that since day eleven is at the top of the table, although it is true that in seven days he has shared the first position with Real Madrid.last_img read more

Real Madrid-Real Sociedad The future Cup: Odegaard, Isak, Vinicius, Valverde, Rodrygo …

first_imgIt is a good day to look into the future at the Bernabéu. Valverde (21 years old) and Vinicius (19) come to fix the derby to Zidane. Odegaard (21) and Isak (20) are fixing the season for Imanol Alguacil. All, plus Rodrygo (19), another precocious one, are cited for today’s Copa duel, which comes at a better time to Zidane’s team and not so much to Imanol Alguacil’s.Odegaard is the LaLiga footballer who gets more passes in the area and participates in more goal actions (players involved in the possession prior to the auction). Joined with 16 years for almost three million, it seemed a lost project of Madrid because he played in Castilla and did not stand out especially in his first year in the Dutch Heerenveen. However, it came up in the second season, It exploded in the Vitesse and is already a nuclear player in the Real. In principle the assignment was planned for one more season in the San Sebastian club, but Madrid meditates to anticipate his return. In September he was player of the month in the championship.Isak has followed the same path. Swedish of Eritrean descent, was a shot in the AIK Solna, whose first team played with 16 years. Already then it was seen as a reissue of Ibrahimovic. His physique has him, but not his demonic character. With 17 he was about to sign for Madrid, but the 8.5 million requested by AIK seemed excessive to the white club. They were paid by Borussia Dortmund. He scored two goals in his first training and it seemed that he would put the Bundesliga upside down until he suffered a slowdown. He spent a year on loan at the modest Dutch Willem II, where he scored 14 goals, and Real saw him a future. Regular substitute during the first months, Willian José has been taken ahead. He has already scored eleven goals (five of them in the last four games), more than the Brazilian, Oyarzabal or Portu, who have enjoyed more minutes. He has six consecutive games as a starter and emerges as a great threat to Madrid tonight. In the Zidane team there are unexpected discards. Hazard will have to keep waiting. He has not played since November 26 and Madrid awaits him for the final stretch. His injury, in a Meunier entry to the PSG, came when he had taken his best shape and has lengthened a lot. Today seemed the day for his return, since he already trains normally, but Zidane wants to go slowly with him. So far he has only played 13 games with Madrid and has scored a goal.Bale is still outThe absence of Casemiro is also surprising, although it was already missing against Zaragoza. Zidane wants him impeccably in the League and Champions. Carvajal, touched, Lucas Vázquez and Bale won’t be either. There is no longer any medical part, physical discomfort or similar that justifies the absence of Welsh. Zidane has placed him as a platoon while Barnett, his agent, warns that the bench banquet does not take away his taste for Spain. There will be clean midfielders in Madrid seen the first time prick against Atletico. The question is whether they will play three or four. With one formula or another, Isco points to the holder. Marcelo is also expected, who now has to share the cake with Mendy and his piece is smaller in the big dates.La Real, in any case, will bring Madrid a match between equals. It is the fourth most leading scorer team in LaLiga, the second in possession (ahead of Zidane’s) and the fourth in passes, records that speak of a group with initiative. His offensive quartet totals 29 goals. And the story is not too adverse either. He eliminated Madrid three times over a total of nine matches. “It seems we are going to the slaughterhouse,” said Imanol Alguacil. He and Madrid know not.last_img read more

A fact that, unlike in the male category, does not have an established limit, even for the incorporation of extra-community soccer players. The one in charge to ignite the controversy was the technician of the Real Society, Gonzalo Archon who claimed after the defeat of his team a reflection of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) both for the difference in budget and the presence of foreigners in the Barca team.“All teams feel that we can’t beat this club and that is something that LaLiga and the Federation have to reflect on. If this is how they want to promote women’s football, that there are more and more foreign players and that the national players are on the bench. It has a much larger budget and the Federation has to reflect if they want it to be like that and humiliate others, “said Arconada. However, and perhaps because of his understandable pain after the blow suffered, his statements are not correct. Betis2. 31436 Heel22eleven56 I raised2622twotwo The Barça it is the third team of the First Iberdrola with more Spanish in his wardrobe, tied precisely with the Royal Society, which has a shorter staff, and with Espanyol. And, if we attend the Barca team in the final, a total of eleven Spaniards participated, among which were six players trained in La Masia, and four foreigners (Martens, Graham, Oshoala and Crnogorcevic). Beyond this, it stands out that coach Culé, Lluís Cortés, only lined up two signings this season, since the Barca team was practically the same with respect to last season, in which the Catalans won 4-1 and 2-5 to the Real in League. From the Federation downplay this controversy and ensure they don’t have to reflect on the number of foreigners in Spanish teams. The one who did reflect was Lluís Cortés, who explained that the secret of their level this season, in which they have only incorporated four signings (two Spanish, one Norwegian and one Swiss), was that they have improved physical preparation and budget. Whether for that or not, the numbers what they do show is that the reason for this is not the number of foreigners in their workforce.last_img read more
